Prof. Murphy delivered the Charles Rees Lecture and received the Charles Rees Award for Heterocyclic Chemistry at the 23rd Lakeland Symposium on Heterocyclic Chemistry at Grasmere. He wore a special bow tie for the lecture which recalls Charles Rees, who usually wore a bow tie. It is one of 4 such ties that were dyed with the orginal sample of Mauveine prepared by Perkin in 1856.

Congratulations to Hardeep Farwaha (Harry) who passed his PhD viva today with Prof. Nigel Simpkins of the University of Birmingham. Harry leaves us to begin a 3 year postdoctoral position with Novartis in Basel, Switzerland. Good luck in the future Harry!

Congratulations to John for winning the 2012 RSC Bader Award! John has been "awarded for his many highly creative and original contributions to reactivity in organic synthesis, including free radical chemistry, the concept of the radical-polar crossover reaction and electron transfer in the invention of organic super electron reducing agents."
